Title: Regional Science: Origins and Development – A Personal Perspective

Presenter: Luc Anselin, University of Chicago.

Speaker Biography: Luc Anselin is Stein-Freiler Distinguished Service Professor of Sociology and the College at the University of Chicago, where he founded and directs the Center for Spatial Data Science. He previously held positions at Arizona State University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Texas at Dallas, the Regional Research Institute, the University of California-Santa Barbara, and The Ohio State University. He was a visiting professor at MIT and Brown University. He holds a Ph.D. in Regional Science from Cornell University. His research deals with methods to handle the complexities of spatial data, both in spatial econometrics and in exploratory spatial data analysis. He developed the SpaceStat and GeoDa software for spatial data exploration. He is a Fellow of RSAI (2004) and was awarded the Walter Isard (2005) and William Alonso prize (2006) of NARSC. He was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2008 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2011.

Title: Anticipating a World of Automated Vehicles: Cost, Energy, & Urban System Implications

Presenter: Kara Kockelman, University of Texas at Austin.

Speaker Biography: Kara Kockelman is a registered professional engineer and holds a Ph.D., MS, and BS in civil engineering, a master’s in city planning, and minors in economics from the University of California at Berkeley. She has been a professor of transportation engineering at the University of Texas at Austin for the past 22 years, and is the recipient of an NSF CAREER Award, Google Research Award, MIT Technology Review Top 100 Innovators Award, and several ASCE and WTS awards.  She serves as President of the North American Regional Science Council and on the Eno Center for Transportation’s Advisory Board, as well as 3 TRB Committees. She has authored over 160 journal articles (and two books), and her primary research interests include planning for shared and autonomous vehicle systems, the statistical modeling of urban systems, energy and climate issues, the economic impacts of transport policy, and crash occurrence and consequences.

Title: COVID-19 and Implosion of Regional Economies

Presenter: Mark Partridge, Ohio State University.

Time: Tuesday, August 11, 2020 11:00am-1:00pm (EST)

Speaker Biography: Mark Partridge is the Swank Chair of Rural-Urban Policy at Ohio State University and is affiliated with GSSI in Italy and Jinan University in China. He served twelve years as Co-Editor of the Journal of Regional Science is Co-editor of Springer Briefs in Regional Science, and serves on a dozen other editorial boards. He has published nearly 150 academic journal papers and 60 other book chapters, briefs, and reports. Dr. Partridge frequently gives presentations and addresses to academic and practitioner groups around the world. He has received research funding from many sources including the European Commission, U.S. National Science Foundation, and Canadian SSHRC. Professor Partridge’s research includes investigating poverty, inequality, and regional growth, and he is a leading rural policy expert. He is a Fellow and President of the Regional Science Association International and has received the prestigious NARSC Isard and Boyce Awards. He also served as NARSC Chair and NARSC President. Dr. Partridge is a Fellow and served as President of the Southern Regional Science Association.
